Strange Happenings
Midnight. They always came at midnight. The chimes from the old grandfather clock in the den jolted Daniel out of his restless dreams. It wasn't the chimes that woke him so much as the knowledge that They were coming. It was the same horrifying ritual, every single night.
The room was illuminated by an eerie pale green glow. Three figures in haz-mat suits stood around his bed. One of them held a large briefcase, another held a gun, and the third--the apparent leader, from the way he acted--was making entries into a large handheld computer. Daniel tried to escape, to run, to even move, but some unseen force held him in place, as immobile as the bed itself. The leader looked up from his computer and signaled to the one holding the briefcase, who set the case down and began to open it. Daniel strained to see its contents, but couldn't from his position. If only he could move...
The leader reached forward, grabbed the bedcovers and--
The shrill blast of Daniel's alarm clock filled the room. He'd had that dream again, the same one he'd been having every night for nearly a month. Except that it didn't feel like a normal dream. It felt more like a memory, but one that had been partially forgotten. Anyway, Dan had more important things to worry about, so he pushed whatever it was aside for the moment. Today was the last day of school, finally. All he had to do was survive his last few final exams, and he'd be home free. He wasn't about to let a creepy dream get him down.

Dr. DiCaoz glanced over his biology classroom. "Is anybody still working on the final?" he asked tiredly. He paused for a moment, then said, "If everybody is finished, you may talk quietly amongst yourselves for the remainder of the period." As the class erupted in chatter, he went back to nursing his hangover.
Daniel loved his biology class. It wasn't just that he was good at it, or that it was the last class of the day. By some bit of luck or fate, he happened to be in the same class as his four closest friends, Gassan, David, Pammy, and Jake. Gassan, David, and Pammy had become absurdly popular since coming to high school. Gassan was Lebanese and therefore "exotic," David was a star swimmer, and Pammy was a cheerleader. In retrospect, popularity was an inevitability. To the other popular kids, Jake an avid follower of the Furry subculture (he called it a craze, but nobody else did) and Daniel, the introspective writer, were social liabilities. Still, Gassan, David, and Pam never let their newfound "friends" keep them away from Jake and Dan. Privately, Daniel was grateful that he had managed to befriend the four people who appeared to be immune to high school drama.
"So, what'd you guys think?" Pammy whispered.
"I'm pretty sure Dr. Di is a nutcase," Gassan answered quickly. He was met with a chorus of approval from his companions.
"Anyway," Pam continued, "are we having our annual Thank-God-The-Schoolyear's-Over party tonight?"
"I can't go," Jake said, "I've got a convention."
"I can't go either," said David, "My dad's taking me camping. He's on a back-to-nature kick."
"I'm visiting my grandma," Gassan said. Pammy rolled her eyes.
"Alright," she sighed, "when do you guys get back?"
"Sunday"
"Sunday evening"
"Sunday, but it'll be late."
"So," Pammy continued, "is Monday night alright with everyone?"
***
The days passed quickly. By the time Monday arrived, he had gone an entire weekend without his mysterious dreams. He was mostly relieved, but part of him wished the visitors would come back so he could find out what they were up to.
The streets were charged with an eerie calm. A summer storm was coming. As Daniel reached Pam's door, he couldn't help but feel a strange foreboding. Something was decidedly wrong. He rang the bell.
"Come in," called Pammy. Dan opened the door and found friend sitting on the floor in a tidy circle. They were all staring at him, an unsettling hunger in their eyes. "We are playing Truth or Dare," Pammy intoned mechanically. "Please, join us. Truth or Dare?"
"Please choose Dare," Gassan said, in the same unearthly voice.
"The Truth is never any fun," agreed David, still in the same tone. Throughout the exchange, none of the four took their eyes off of Daniel.
"Is everything alright?" he asked. "You all seem...different."
Pammy answered in the same monotone as before: "We are collectively unnerved at a series of recurring dreams we have been having. Perhaps you too are experiencing these visions?"
"Yeah," Dan said, "but I'm not acting that weird about it."
"Perhaps," Pammy said, "All will be made more clear if you answer this simple question: Truth...or Dare?"

The Dare
"Dare," Dan said shakily.
"Very well," Pammy responded, "your dare is to go to Area 50. You are familiar with Area 50, I trust?"
Jake jumped in: "It is a military complex on the outskirts of our town. It has been abandoned for a long time, though, so it will pose no immediate threat to you."
"It is nothing to be afraid of," said Gassan, "consider it to be something of a rite of passage."
"If you are truly afraid," said Pammy, "then we will accompany you."
Daniel stared at his friends incredulously. They had never acted this strangely before, and they had certainly never gone for childish dares before.
David appeared to sense his hesitation, and added, "perhaps Area 50 is somehow related to...Them."
Dan knew what that was about, and David was right. There seemed to be some connection between his nightly visitors and the military base. He couldn't quite place it, but the link was there. "Actually," added David, "all this talk of Area 50 has sparked my curiosity." He didn't sound the least bit like his curiosity has been even remotely sparked."
"I, too, am interested," agreed Pammy disinterestedly.
"As are we," said Gassan and Jake in eerie unison.
"Perhaps," Pammy went on, "we should go to Area 50 ourselves, whether or not Daniel is interested." The four of them stood to leave. Pam stopped for a moment, and asked, "Are you joining us, Daniel?"

Area 50 Arrival
Daniel looked at his friends nervously. "Al...alright," Daniel said reluctantly, "I will go..."
"Nice to have you coming David," Pammy exclaimed. All David could do is let out a sheepish smile. "We will meet at Area 50 at 9 P.M. tonight, everyone can run by their houses and grab anything we may need. Flash lights, snacks, etc."
"I am just going to relax at my house until it is time" David said
"We'll I will see everyone then," Gassan said. Everyone soon dispersed and left to their respective houses.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Later at 9 Daniel met his friends at the base.
"Everybody ready to go in?" Pammy inquired.
"Yeah!" Gassan shouted.
"Let's do it!" As did Jake.
"Sure am" David said
"Unfortunately..." Daniel murmured.
David looked around and saw the front entrance directly ahead.
Far down to his left a hole in the fence could be seen.
And to his right a large tunnel could be seen. Though it was pitch black, so somebody better have a flash light.

Split Up
Last week had been the last time ‘they’ had visited Daniel, and ever since then, strange things began to happen. Daniel had been seeing things, and exploring through this kind of place was not helping him handling things any better.
They had decided to split up, in order to cover the grounds better. Pammy went with David, of course, and Gassan was left with Jake. That ultimately left Daniel for himself, and the guy couldn’t be anymore worried.
He wasn’t even into any of this, but why did he have to be the only one who had to go by himself?

Into the Void
Daniel got a flashlight for his own. Since the bunker and the front entrance were taken by the others, Daniel was left with no any other choice but to go into the dark tunnel. He didn’t like where he had to go for one bit, but at the same time, he also didn’t one to be the one who spoiled the mood.
The tunnel was dark and rusty, with dirt covering pretty much every inch of the place. Every step he took caused the soles of his shoes to sank lower, almost making him slip for a handful of times. He had to be careful if he didn’t want to fall down.
He kept on walking until he found an intersection which one of them lead him to a small lab. The room, just like the rest of the place, appeared to be abandoned. The lab was so old that he could see mold growing on the surface. While the place was old and disgusting, Daniel couldn’t help it when curiosity started to creep in. This place seemed like it had a story of its own, and his curiosity was telling him to go and explore. But at the same time, shouldn’t he call for the others? What should he do?

Explore the lab
Daniel flashed his flashlight toward the center, when something strange seemed to be dunked in a water tank. He leaned in to take a closer look, not expecting it to move.
When the slab of meat jerked, it took him completely by surprise, forcing him to jump back. The sudden motion caused Daniel to trip, and in an effort to maintain his balance, his hands reached out, randomly grabbing onto something. He felt a fabric in his grip, before his back felt the impact of the fall, along with a series of fragile glasses breaking left and right around him.

The Shift
Daniel tried to stand, but he couldn’t. His body felt heavier than normal, even though he didn’t felt the slight bit of tiredness. Strange. What was going on? And what was wrong with his waist? No matter what he did, his body refused to bend up the right way. Daniel tried to move, but he could also notice that some body parts were not responding as they were supposed to — heck, he couldn’t even feel his fingers and toes.
His vision felt wrong, as if the reality itself had been distorted. At first he thought it was just because he was feeling dizzy, but the blurriness never really went away. It just stayed there, and Daniel couldn’t shake it off. Why was this happening to him?
The boy had accidentally inhaled some fumes, and it caused him to let out of fit of cough. Strangely, the sound that came out from him was so unnatural that he didn’t even recognized it when a screeching sound came out instead. To be honest, it startled him. What the hell was going on? This was getting creepier and creepier. If this went on, he did not think he would last much longer!

Run
Daniel bolted out of that place as soon as he could. Or at least tried to. He almost lost his balanced for the second time when he tried to stand up, and as a result, he was forced to hold himself still using both of his arms. Strange, even his arms were not working so well. He couldn’t even make them bend the way he wanted to. What was going on with him?
Overwhelmed with fear, the boy didn’t even bother trying to stand up this time. Instead, he just crawled his way out of the lab, not wanting to spend another minute in there. No good. He needed to find his friends. The sooner they get out of that place, the better it would be.
The boy was breathing hard; from both panic and his body being not used to running. Daniel didn’t care, though. All he wanted was to get away.
And while he ran, the boy failed to notice a familiar pattern of sound that he made while he did so, his mind too scrambled to register things properly, including the strange swishing movement that kept on brushing against his ass.

Rendezvous
Daniel was in the middle of making a turn back toward the main hallway, when he suddenly saw something entering his vision.
It was David and Pammy, and they seemed extremely surprised to encounter him. So surprised that Pammy let out an ear-splitting scream.
The sheer power of her scream caused Daniel to stumble back. He was so glad to finally find his friends, but his vision was still messed up.
“Pammy! Pammy! Help!” he tried to convey his distress, but all they could hear was that whining sound again.
“No! Get away from me, you freak!” Pammy unexpected stretched back, stumbling back toward David for help.
“Wait, Pammy, it’s me! Please, help me!” Daniel desperately said, but was ignored. Even David was trying to push him off. What was going on over here? Why won’t they help him?

Cry for Help
“What’s that thing? A horse?” David tried to wave the creature away.
Her fur was white with some beige spots, but they couldn’t tell much because of the lack of lighting. She has long mane, and her front was exposed, showing a pair of unnaturally erotic perky breasts — which are even bigger than Pammy’s. If it were not for the fact that she’s a horse, he would have thought he’d hit that.
“David, let’s get out of here— Wait, are you ogling at that thing? David, I can’t believe you! Let’s go!” Pammy cried out loud.
Meanwhile, their reaction toward his appearance was still unregistered by the boy himself though.
Suddenly, Daniel let out a series of coughing, before his throat was finally cleared.
“Guys, it’s me, Daniel. Why are you guys acting this way?”
Unbeknown to the boy himself, he had been running off on all fours, yet he couldn’t even feel an unnatural strain on his body. When he tried to stand up this time, the boy finally managed to do so. Though when he looked down upon himself, he saw some strange things.
His hands . . . They were gone, and instead were replaced by what seemed to be horse heels. Pale blonde locks were subtracting the corners of his vision, and when he looked further down, he could see to perfectly perky mounds of breasts in the color of white sitting at the top of his exposed ribcage. What . . . the . . . heck . . . .
And now it was his turn to freak out.
From the distance, Gassan and Jake could hear another blood curdling scream from the distance, this time even much louder than the ones before, originating from the direction where they came from.
“What’s going on?” Gassan asked.
“I don’t know. Maybe the guys found something. Let’s investigate,” Jake said, sounding much more enthusiastic.

Unicorn
“Woah, what is this? I can’t believe it! A unicorn! Where did she come from?” Jake, like David, was also staring lustfully at Daniel.
“Guys, it’s me,” the feminine voice that came out of her snout is lovely, not belonging to the poor boy at all. “I didn’t know what happened. Some glasses fell near me, and the next thing I knew, I turned into this.”
“Wait, Daniel, is that guy?” Gassan asked, liking surprised.
“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you guys.”
“Wait, Daniel? How come you just turned into a horse? And why is it possible that you have bigger boobs than me?” now it was Pammy’s turn to interrogate him— er, her, her tone sounding jealous.
“I told you, I don’t know. It must have been from something I found at the old lab. How could you even say that? Guys, I’m telling you, I’m freaking out over here, and I haven’t even got a clue of how to turn myself back. Am I gonna stuck like this forever? Am I?”
“Let’s inspect the lab you found. Maybe we might get a clue there or something,” Gassan suggested. “Come on, Jake.”
“What? No way! Why would you want to turn your body back to your old boring self?” Ouch! Burn. “The you right now is much more interesting,” Jake said with a disturbing grin plastered on his face, his eyes hungry, unable to stop himself from taking in Daniel’s new appearance.
“Enough of that, Jake. Our friend is in trouble. We should help him.”
Jake suddenly turned angry. “No, you back off! I don’t want to, and what are you going to do about it? Force me? You’re not the boss of me!”
Gassan glared at the other guy in annoyance, before backing off.
“Come on,” the Lebanese told Daniel instead, in which the unicorn followed.
The rest comes following.

Accusation
“I don’t believe your bullcrap for even a moment, Daniel. You know what, I think you did this on purpose,” Pammy accuses pointedly.
“What? Why would you say something like that?” His new feminine voice cracks when he speaks.
“I mean, look at you. The guys all can’t stop drooling on you. It’s obvious that you’re doing this to yourself so that you’ll get all of the attention.”
“That’s crazy. You make no sense! I don’t want to get attention, especially not from men. It was an accident, I didn’t know what I saw doing. I was tripping and falling, and the next thing I knew, I knocked those glasses down and got turned into this.” Daniel tried to desperately to explain, but even the guys start to look at him doubtfully.
“Bullcrap!” she spat at the boy, before turning to her left. “I’m right, right, David?”
David was too busy ogling at Daniel’s new body, part estranged part enthralled, before finally realizing that the girl next to him was asking him a question. “Ah, eh, yeah?” he muttered unsurely, which Pammy blindly took as an approval.
“What? It’s not true, I’m telling you guys!” Daniel cried out, but his voice annoyingly stayed sounding like a whimpering, helpless girl. Whatever type of freak show he had been turned into, he wasn’t asking for it. But the way it made every bit of his action turned distorted was annoying the heck out of him. The words that came out from his mount made it sound like he was not telling the true, that he was faking it this entirely time, which frustratingly only proved Pammy’s accusation even more.

Different
When Daniel sneezed, the sound that came out from him even sounded so ladylike, it gave him the chills. He used to be such a loud and messy sneezer, but the motion only let out a small whimpering, almost like a little bird’s.
Unexpectedly, Jake held out his jacket for Daniel for wear immediately after, and the former boy simply stared at the other guy in disbelieve.
“You’re cold. Take it.”
Well, that was unusual. Jake wasn’t usually this nice to people, especially not to someone like Daniel.
“T-thanks,” the female unicorn muttered carefully, and in return Jake sent him a charming smile. It was unexpected, but Daniel thought that it was nice of him.
Meanwhile, the others were looking jealously at how the two interact. Pammy, for having been used to get all the male attentions to herself. David, for not understanding why he felt this strange fascination toward the bodacious female. Gassan, more out of concerned than anything else (or maybe that’s just what he’d like others to believe?).
Daniel fastened the jacket around his new body, the material tightening closely around him. Thankfully, he still has his pants on, although the clothes felt tight on his body. It did not matter. There were other things he should be in concern with, namely his questionable fate.

The Lab
Daniel showed them which way he took, and when they arrived at the place, they immediately inspect the lab. Pammy didn’t show as much enthusiasm, unlike Gassan and the others. The girl still thought the worse out of Daniel.
The now unicorn girl was trying hard to make out of the newly broken mess. Perhaps if he could read the label that was once attached to the things, he could make some sense out of this?
“Here, let me help,” Gassan suddenly appeared right behind her, and she can’t help but to jump back a little bit. She can feel his ripped chest muscles brushing up against her back slightly as she did so, and the female unicorn quickly step away, putting some good distance between them.
Daniel didn’t know why he was reacting this way, but this new body seemed like it had a mind of its own. He had been feeling different, and he didn’t mean just from the outside. He was slowly engulfed by this unexplained instinct to lean into the touch, even though the real him didn’t want to.
“Sorry,” the handsome Lebanese muttered, before turning his attention to the labels. He shone the flashlight upon it.
“This one says, ‘XX Unicorn’,” he said out loud.
Jake leaned in from Daniel’s left, trying to take advantage of the closeness, yet the female unicorn was too preoccupied to notice the other guy’s hidden motive.
“XX? Like the female chromosome?” the furry obsessed offered, unexpectedly being helpful.
“Could be,” Gassan shrugged his shoulders.
“I think that was from over here,” Daniel pointed out at one of the desk top. “Maybe we could find something useful nearby. If this is some sort of experiment, I’m sure they’d keep some notes here somewhere.”
Pammy approaches one of the tables lazily, before randomly picking up a book. Coincidently, it also happened to be the notes Daniel was hoping to exist. After looking from left to right cautiously, she contemplated whether she should show it to the others or not, though.

Show
The girl brought it up to the others’ attention. They read through the notes together. It explained a detailed description of the experimental drug, which Daniel must have accidentally inhaled when the container exploded. There did not seem to be any relatable explanation of how to reverse the transformation though, since it had not been invented yet. It seemed like the dropped the project before they could get to it.

Walking Nightmare
“I can’t believe it . . . I’m gonna stuck looking like this forever?” Daniel whimpered in disbelieve, his new feminine voice gaining more sympathy than usual.
“It’s okay, Dan, I’m here with you. I’m sure it won’t be so bad,” Jake placed a shoulder around Daniel’s shoulder, almost unable to circling around his— her body for being so tall this time.
“Yeah, right. You’re only saying that because you want to bone him— I mean her,” Pammy accuses bluntly, folding her arms under her chest.
Jake grinned when he was busted. “Well, can’t blame a guy for trying.”
“What? No!” Daniel backed off, disturbed upon hearing the other guy’s intention. “I’m a guy, I don’t wanna sleep with other dudes.”
“It’s not just some other dude. Just me,” Jake pointed out.
“That’s really not the point!” Daniel squealed, and inside he was curses all over for sound like such a damsel in distress. The kind of voice she was making was only garnering more unwanted attention to herself. Wait, when did he start referring to herself as a she? Dang, she did it again! Curses!
“Guys, you gotta help me out over here.” But when Daniel turned to the others, they only gave her pitiful looks. It seemed like even they didn’t think there would be any other way out of this.
“This can’t be happening,” Daniel whimpered, close to tears.
“It’s okay. I’m gonna take good care of you,” Jake patted her by the shoulder with a smile.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t think there’s any other way to turn you back,” Gassan threw her an equally concerned look.
“What am I supposed to do now? My life is ruined,” she cried helplessly, rubbing the side of her heels at her face.
“It’s alright. Daddy’s got you. If your parents don’t want you anymore, you can live in my house,” Jake said with a happy grin on his face, looking way too enthusiastic for someone who had become so unlucky.
“Oh puh-lease, you just want to take advantage of her,” Pammy butted in, “And stop referring to yourself as ‘Daddy’. It’s appalling.”
“Oh geez, why don’t you mind your own business, Pam?” Jake shot back.
And while his friends are arguing, Daniel was slowly making his descend to desperation.
No . . . This couldn’t be. He didn’t want to stay looking like this. Not for the rest of his life . . . .
Written by Stella Purple on 17 June 2017
Accusation 2
“What were you doing over here, anyway? This place is obviously dangerous. Why did you get near it?” David sounded out his question. “Unless of course, if it’s because you had intended to do this on purpose in the first place.”
“What? What nonsense is this? Not you, too! Besides, who was the one who wanted to go here in the first place?”
“It’s okay, Daniel, you don’t have to lie to us anymore. We know that you did this to yourself on purpose,” Pammy egged on, no longer caring if it was the truth or not.
“Yeah, you can also stay with mine or David’s place if you need to, right David?” Suddenly being asked by Gassan’s question made David jerked consciously.
“Ah, eh, y-eah, sure,” David responded back with a little bit of hesitation.
And while Daniel was glad that his friends were trying to console him, but he — now a she — still could not allow her feelings to ease back for still being thought of doing this to herself on purpose. He didn’t want to turn himself into a female, let alone a talking, two-legged unicorn. Why wouldn’t they believe in him? Though Daniel supposed things could have turned out to be worse, but still . . . .
And in this end, what should she do now?

Go Home
Daniel didn’t really know what to expect when he got home. Her parents had been startled, of course, but they couldn’t even recognize their own son when she stood in front of them. She had tried to explain, but his parents were having none of it, only seeing her for her outer appearance. Her father even chased her out, saying that there was no way a freak of a show like her could be related to him. Abomination! her own mother had called her.
In the end, crush hearted, Daniel tried to contact the others, hoping that their offers were still up for grab. But who was she going to call?
