Uphill
Daniel was sullenly wheeling her bike up a hill, once again on the path to Area 50. Her friends were several paces to either side of her. Everyone had finally agreed to come but the atmosphere was stiff, growing tense and quiet smothered them. They each seemed to be trapped in their own thoughts.
They had left earlier than last time but the light was beginning to dwindle. It wouldn’t be too long before it was dark and mostly like would’ve been already if it weren’t summer. The dramatic lighting served only to accentuate the mood of the small group. Behind the silhouette of his back, Daniel could see a glimpse of the pale pink tingeing Gassan’s melancholic expression.
Daniel wondered if she had been too harsh...too hasty. Maybe Jake had had good reason to act the way he did. She glanced down at her slender, fur covered hands. Maybe it wouldn’t be so terrible to stay this way...but the cries of her old self still echoed within her. It left her conflicted. She looked back at Gassan. To her surprise, he looked back at her. She turned away, her face flushed with embarrassment. She just hoped the fluff covered it.
After a few minutes she hesitantly peeked at Gassan again. He was still looking at her. She was startled but held his gaze this time.
