It's a dog's life. In pink.
Standing beside the pond (or whatever) you whimper and whine, and start yipping sadly. You can't even talk any more!
Suddenly you are interrupted by a deep growl that does not come from your stomach. You turn around and see a bulldog staring curiously at you. He growls again, and you feel like he's trying to say something you are on the verge of understanding. Maybe you just have to change mental gears?
You close your eyes and try thinking like a dog. Thinking like a pink poodle would be going too far, so you just try to think generic dog.
You open your eyes and say politely: "I beg your pardon?" Those aren't the exact words that come out your mouth, but your sounds, smell and posture somehow convey that meaning.
The bulldog rolls his eyes. "Well, la-di-da, Miss High Society!"
<span class="female">"There is no need to be like that!" you whimper.</span>
"Actually I find it quite useful for intimidating people," the bulldog points out. "Anyway, you're new. Don't know me, don't know anyone or anything. You should be careful so you don't upset the only one who can help you."
"And that's you?"
"Maybe."
"Well, can you help me?"
"We'll get to that. Right now we're working on 'Do I want to?'"
