First off this book does a good job of setting up most of the rules of the world. Where humans and shifters can be in the same nightclub without too many problems
Soon however we get the first problem that drives most of the world plot. The main character finds out her mentor has been murdered. This is quickly followed by her using magic which because she is a shifter is not allowed.
Further worldbuilding occurs when we learn of tension between the three main groups, human,mages and shifters. We also learn how the shifters started.
By the end while the big problems are not stopped or explained, the little problems are solved for the moment.
Overall, a good start to the series, that shows quite a bit of promise for the next books
